Nova espécie de peixe transparente é descoberta no Rio Negro, no AM

Uma equipe formada por três pesquisadores brasileiros e um alemão conseguiu descobrir uma nova espécie de peixe na Amazônia. Em meados de novembro de 2011, uma expedição de 15 dias, na região do município de Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, a 846 quilômetros de Manaus, possibilitou a captura de um peixe transparente denominado Cyanogaster noctivaga. Com dois centímetros de comprimento, o animal nunca havia sido identificado na literatura científica, de acordo com a líder da expedição, a bióloga Manoela Marinho.

O objetivo do grupo era capturar peixes de pequeno porte. Durante três turnos diários, os pesquisadores se deslocavam a diferentes áreas do Rio Negro, no município de Santa Isabel (AM). Marinho, que atua no Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), contou que o tamanho, a cor e a transparência do pequeno peixe chamaram atenção. "Em diferentes momentos da expedição, a espécie nova só foi capturada à noite. Daí concluímos que se trata de um peixe de hábitos noturnos", afirmou a bióloga.

A pesquisadora disse que as características do peixe obrigaram à definição de uma nova espécie. "Consultamos a literatura científica e vimos que esse peixe tinha um conjunto de características que eram tão únicas que faziam dele uma espécie nova. Então criamos um gênero novo, para melhor classificar esse peixe”, acrescentou.

A denominação Cyanogaster noctivaga faz referência à coloração e aos hábitos do peixe. Enquanto o primeiro nome “Cyanogaster” significa “estômago azul”, “noctivaga” faz menção ao “vaguear noturno” da espécie.

 

Além de Manoela Marinho, a expedição contou com a participação dos brasileiros Mônica Toledo-Piza e George Mattox. O alemão Ralf Britz, do Museu de História Natural de Londres, registrou as imagens da viagem e da nova espécie. Em entrevista ao G1, Britz, que é especialista nesse tipo de pesquisa, afirmou que a escolha do Rio Negro para o trabalho havia sido respaldada por uma expedição anterior, feita por Maoela, Mônica e George na região de Santa Isabel. “Essa expedição deles nos mostrou que poderíamos encontrar peixes de pequeno porte ali. Percebemos também que o Rio Negro parece abrigar mais peixes em miniatura do que qualquer outro rio amazônico”, ressaltou.

Para capturar um peixe com 2 centímetros de comprimento e corpo transparente, o quarteto coletou amostras em diferentes locais e habitats nos arredores de Santa Isabel. Segundo o alemão, uma noite os pesquisadores jogaram uma rede perto de uma praia rochosa e notaram um número de pequenos peixes transparentes nadando rápido. “A luz das nossas lanternas foi refletida pelos peixes e fez com que os seus corpos ganhassem uma cor azul brilhante. Naquele momento, vimos que tínhamos encontrado algo diferente”, lembrou.

 

Ao ver o cardume, Britz tirou aquela que define como “uma das fotos mais difíceis que já fez”. “O Cyanogaster é extremamente frágil e morreu segundos depois de ser transferido para um tanque específico para fotos. Então, na primeira noite eu não consegui uma imagem boa. Na segunda noite eu coloquei o tanque próximo à superfície da praia. Com a ajuda de George, joguei uma rede e, assim que capturamos aquelas preciosidades, as transferi para o tanque com uma colher grande, para que elas não ficassem um só segundo fora d´água”, relatou. A estratégia deu certo e os peixes conseguiram sobreviver o suficiente para que o pesquisador fizesse seus registros. “Quando eu mostrei o resultado para o resto da equipe todos ficaram sem palavras. Foi ali que vimos toda a beleza da espécie pela primeira vez. Descobrir um peixe tão diferente em um lugar inesperado é um daqueles momentos na vida que você vai lembrar para sempre e vai contar para seus filhos e netos”, continuou o alemão.

E como uma descoberta desse porte influencia o campo da ciência? Na opinião do pesquisador, a equipe conseguiu encontrar uma nova peça no quebra-cabeça da evolução dos peixes. “Nós fornecemos uma descrição detalhada da espécie, incluindo a sua anatomia, para usufruto de todos os estudiosos dessa classe. Descobrir algo assim é emocionante, até pela beleza e a sutil combinação do corpo transparente e do abdômen que reflete a cor azul do Cyanogaster”, resumiu.

Já a bióloga Manoela Marinho considerou a possibilidade de outras espécies de peixe de pequeno porte entrarem em extinção antes mesmo de serem descobertas. “A quantidade de peixes encontrada no Rio Amazonas é única no mundo, e ainda há muito que descobrir. É importante que essa biodiversidade seja conhecida e preservada, visto que o futuro do planeta é extremamente dependente das relações humanas com o meio ambiente”, frisou.

A coordenadora do Departamento de Coleção de Peixes do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa da Amazônia (Inpa) em Manaus, Lúcia Helena Rapp PyDaniel, acredita que a descoberta evidencia ainda mais a riqueza da biodiversidade amazônica e a importância de se desenvolver mais trabalhos na região. Segundo ela, muitas espécies já foram descobertas ao longo dos anos, mas estão em processo de descrição. "Isso apresenta uma enorme diversidade de peixes, com muitas formas ainda a serem descobertas", disse.

Sobre a espécie encontrada no Rio Negro, Lúcia PyDaniel disse que o Cyanogaster noctivaga pertece a um grupo de peixes que habita o local há poucos anos. "Apesar do pouco que sabemos ainda sobre evolução da biota amazônica, esta espécie pertence a um grupo de peixes que não é dos mais antigos. Com certeza, essa espécie, como várias outras de pequeno porte, tem um papel no ecossistema que habitam, papel esse que ainda temos que entender melhor", explicou.

A pesquisadora, especialista em Sistemática Filogenética de Peixes, disse ainda que estudiosos do Inpa já descreveram dezenas de espécies novas de peixes nos últimos 20 anos de trabalhos no Rio Negro. "O ano passado o Inpa participou de uma expedição para a área de Santa Isabel onde diversas coletas foram realizadas. Porém, o Rio Negro , por si só, é um ambiente complexo e apresenta uma grande diversidade de ambientes e igarapés.  É portanto, um ambiente muito propício a novos descobrimentos", concluiu.
